And if your Lord Ashcroft its Belize. Now the last time AG looked Belize was not part of the United Kingdom which causes a slight problem for the peer, deputy chairman of the Tories and their biggest donor. So why can't the Tories come out and say where Ashcroft's residency is? Because they are "evasive and obfuscatory", not AG's words but that of the Information Commissioner.
The Commissioner goes on to say -
"Lord Ashcroft could have ended the speculation about his residency by making a public statement to that effect. He has chosen not to do this. He has furthered the speculation by stating that it is a private matter and, as stated on his website, 'If home is where the heart is Belize is my home'.
Ashcroft made a promise to become a permanent resident of the UK as a condition of his ennoblement in 2000. But successive Conservative leaders have since refused to reveal whether he has fulfilled that promise and taken up UK residency.
Ashcroft has funded and masterminded the battle in key marginals but he and the Tories refuse to clarify his tax status. If everything is above borad then why be "evasive and obfuscatory"?
But lets face it, it's part of the Tory handbook. Chapter One - when asked a straight forward question don't give a straight forward answer be evasive and ensure your answer is obfuscatory, it will allow you to back track further down the line. For example, tax on married couples, Europe and the economy.
This close to an election it can't have gone down well in Tory HQ that they are being described like this.
